NC OBD II Certification

This course is designed to meet the training and licensing requirements (initial and/or renewal) for the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Emissions Inspection Program administered by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, License, and Theft Bureau.

Upon completion, a student will understand the rules, regulations, and procedures for conducting an OBD emissions inspection; be able to inspect a vehicle properly; and be prepared to take the state certification exam. Initial and recertification classes will be eight hours of instruction. The registration fee includes the workbook used during class. Registration is required.

GTCC recommends that students seeking initial certification take the safety class before the OBD II class. 

Required materials: 

  • Students must bring an LT-310 form signed by the owner, partner, or officer of the inspection station. 
  • Students must have a valid N.C. driver’s license to be certified to perform inspections.

In person: Complete the Continuing Education Registration Form and bring it with your payment (check, cash, credit card, or money order) to one of the GTCC campuses.

Students must:

Students who successfully complete the NC Auto Safety Certification class will have their LT-310 paperwork mailed to the DMV for certification. Paperwork is mailed within 2 business days of the class ending. 

Requirements for successful completion:

  • Attendance: Must be in class 100% of the class hours
  • Must pass the Certification Exam with 80% or better

Students will be dropped from the class if they miss the first day and will not be eligible for refund.

The college will make a 100% refund of registration fees if you officially withdraw from class before the first meeting. Also if the class is canceled or full, GTCC will make a full refund. Non-attendance is not a basis for a refund.
