EKG Technician Training Program
Jamestown Campus, High Point Campus Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) technicians operate specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic cardiac information for physicians. In just a few months, you could be a member of the medical profession conducting EKG diagnostic tests needed by physicians and physician extenders to save lives. Most EKG technicians work full time in hospitals. Other opportunities are found in doctors' offices, medical laboratories and outpatient clinics. The work requires stamina due to frequent standing and positioning patients with disabilities for an EKG. Shifts can include working days, evenings and weekends because hospitals continually need diagnostic testing. In 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that job openings for cardiovascular technologists and technicians, including vascular technicians, will increase 10 percent from 2016 to 2026 – faster than the average rate of other occupations. Job openings for cardiovascular technicians, in general, are expected to grow as the large baby boomer population ages, thus upping the demand for diagnostic cardiac testing to assess various heart conditions. At GTCC, you can complete the EKG training program in just under two months, inclusive of 96 clock hours. Your studies will cover cardiac anatomy and physiology, heart disease, pacemakers, medical terminology and ethics. You would gain practical training in the operation and maintenance of EKG equipment. Additionally, you would practice using 12-lead electrodes and interpreting EKG strips that provide data on heart performance. You may also learn about Holter monitors and cardiac stress testing. Graduates of approved training programs are eligible to sit for national certification examination. Most employers prefer or require this certification. Beginning pay is $16 to $18 per hour. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. |

Upon transfer, students who earn the Associate in Arts degree generally major in fields such as anthropology, business, communication, economics, English, foreign language, geography, history, humanities, music, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology. If you break sociology into its root parts (socio/ology), it literally means the study of society. Auguste Comte founded the discipline in 1832 as an attempt to understand better widespread social changes that were affecting Europe as a result of the French Revolution. To think sociologically, you must engage your sociological imagination which is learning to understand events and actions from a larger societal perspective. While this can be challenging, as you may have no experience with this type of interpretation, it is a valuable skill in today's market: Employers appreciate sociologists' ability to think outside the box and hire them for many different types of jobs. For example, our past students can be found in social service occupations, sales and marketing, and public relations in addition to the field of sociology. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. |
