The GTCC Campus Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency comprised of 35 sworn law enforcement officers.

Officers are deployed across all campuses to provide a safe learning environment.

The department's goals are:

  • to be proactive to prevent crime,
  • to focus on being visible and accessible daily.

We diligently work to create positive relationships through positive encounters. We believe the first time you meet a campus police officer should not be during an emergency.

We believe that campus security is a team approach — a collaboration of all faculty, staff, and students. Working together and having a vested interest in campus security is everyone's responsibility.

  • Always lock your vehicle when you leave it and remember to take your keys with you.
  • Do not leave valuable items (like book bags, purses, wallets, phones, computers, etc.) unattended anywhere on campus – even for a brief period of time.
  • Take appropriate responsibility for your own safety.
  • When feasible, walk with at least one other person – especially at night. Have your cell phone accessible and be ready to call for assistance if needed.
  • Report any criminal or suspicious behavior you may see to Campus Police as quickly as you safely can. • Ensure that evacuees group at designated assembly points.
  • Help ensure that lanes of travel used by emergency vehicles are kept clear.
  • Communicate what information you have about the incident with the responding Campus Police officer and other emergency responders.

  • Ensure that 911 has been notified.
  • Stay with the patient if you safely can.
  • Communicate what information you have about the situation to the Campus Police officer.

All accidents must be reported to the Campus Police Department as soon as possible. GTCC does not provide emergency medical care, but First Aid supplies are available upon requests at Campus Police Offices.

Weather Warning means a storm has been spotted.

If you hear a Weather Warning Announcement

  • Walk quickly toward the center area of the building.
  • Ensure special attention is given to those requiring assistance during the evacuation (children, persons with disabilities, etc.).

In the event of inclement weather, GTCC will determine whether to delay classes, cancel classes, or close the College. A decision will be made by 5:30 a.m. for day classes and by 3:00 p.m. for evening classes.

Delay Notifications, Definitions and Procedures

  • College (or Campus) Closed means neither students nor employees are expected to report to the College (Campus).
  • Day Classes are classes, events and activities that begin PRIOR to 5:00 p.m. during the week and on weekends.
  • Evening Classes are classes events and activities that start AT 5:00 p.m. OR LATER during the week and on weekends.
  • NOTE: The College will determine how canceled classes will make up the work. Only pre-determined essential staff will need to report
  • College (or Campus) Closing at (time) means that students or employees who are not currently on campus SHOULD NOT REPORT to the College (Campus). All faculty, staff and students currently on campus are expected to leave their campus at the closing time indicated in a manner consistent with any evacuation instructions given by Campus Police. The College will determine how canceled classes will make up the work. Essential cadre staff and other employees identified by a cadre member as essential for a particular event will remain at work or report to work.
  • College (or Campus) Will Open At (time) (Day or Evening) means that classes will not meet prior to the announced opening time. Students, faculty and staff will resume their regular schedule at the announced opening time.
  • Classes Canceled (Day or Evening) means that there are no classes for STUDENTS. Employees are expected to report to work or take annual leave. The message would read “all day classes canceled” or “all night classes canceled.”

When you dial 911 from your office landline phone, your call will be routed to the 911 Center that provides service for your location. For Greensboro, Jamestown, the Conference Center, Aviation, and Small Business Center campuses, your call will go to Guilford Metro 911.  If you are on the High Point Campus, your call will go to High Point 911 who dispatches High Point Police and High Point Fire only. If it is a medical related call on the High Point campus, they will transfer the call to Guilford Metro 911.

NOTE: You do not have to dial 9 before dialing 911 to call out from a GTCC network phone. Just dial 911.

When you dial 911, GTCC Campus Police are also automatically notified.  This automatic safety measure allows GTCC Campus Police to respond quickly to your incident. Per their protocol, Campus Police will also attempt to contact you directly by telephone and will dispatch a Police Officer to your location.

Seventy-seven percent of all calls reported to 911 are by wireless callers. Your wireless call will automatically route to a local 911 center. However, due to cell tower geographic placement and assigned Emergency Service Number (ESN), your call may have to be transferred to the correct 911 center. When you call 911 by cell phone, Campus Police are not automatically notified, as they would be if you placed the call from a GTCC office or landline phone. The 911 center will contact Campus Police and dispatch first responders depending on the type of call for service. GTCC Campus Police would be the law enforcement first responder. They will request any additional first responder resources as needed.

Absolutely.  You can contact Campus Police at any time for any reason at (336) 819-2046 (24 hours). If you're calling from any campus phone, you may also press Line 2.

Yes. Remain calm when calling 911. Answer the dispatcher’s questions and follow any directions provided. It may seem they are asking too many questions but, typically, your call has already been fast-forwarded for dispatch while they ask additional questions.

The questions are for first responder safety and to assess patient/victim information, in case you are asked to intervene (i.e. perform CPR). Please make sure you give your specific campus address, building name or building number, or room number as identifiers. If the incident is in a parking lot, please be as precise as possible on the location. Seconds matter.
