New and Reapplying Students

Sign up for First Advising

You will learn how to register for classes, get information about resources that are available at GTCC, and work with a Student Success Coach to develop your college plan.

For advising, you can either walk in and wait or use QLess to hold your place in line. Appointments are usually 30-45 minutes.

Choose one of these options:

  1. Walk in on a first-come, first-served basis at one of these campuses:
    • Jamestown Campus
      Medlin Campus Center, Room 3100
      601 E. Main St., Jamestown

    • Greensboro Campus: 
      CEC, Room 132
      3505 E. Wendover Ave., Greensboro

    • High Point Campus: 
      H1, Room 122
      901 S. Main Street High Point

      Hours:
       8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday
      Note: We strongly encourage students to arrive 30-45 minutes before the end of the business day.

  2. Use QLess Virtual Line to hold your place in line until someone can see you.

Current and Returning Students

During the fall and spring academic terms (when classes are meeting), schedule an advising session by:

  • Sending an email to your assigned academic advisor as listed in your Navigate account; see instructions in FAQ below.
  • Calling your advisor to schedule an appointment (contact information is on the Faculty/Staff Directory page).

During the summer term and in-between terms:

For advising when your faculty advisor is not available, please contact the Student Success Center through one of the in-person or remote options listed under the New and Reapplying Students section above.

October and March are Kickoff Months for Advising

Make an appointment in Navigate to meet with your advisor or download the Navigate app to schedule your appointment from your phone.

It is important that you see your advisor on a regular basis to stay on track for your degree. Advising starts every October and March and continues throughout the year. For more information about advising or to find your advisor, use the Frequently Asked Questions below.

At Guilford Technical Community College, we know that to be competitive in today’s global job market, a certificate, diploma or degree allows you to obtain a job where you can earn a sustainable income. To support yourself and your family it takes more than just a high school education. Student Success and Retention Services makes it our mission to support all students through your education and to graduation. 

Here is a useful list of success tips.

  • Go to class!
  • Read and use your syllabus.
  • Get to know your professors.
  • Earn good grades.
  • Be prepared.
  • Understand that being a student is a full-time job.
  • Be patient with yourself.
  • Balance and budget your time.
  • Don’t put off taking difficult classes.
  • Use college resources (You paid for them!) like academic tutoring.
  • Work with your academic advisor regularly.
  • Get involved in GTCC. Join a club, attend a sporting event or attend other events.
  • Take course pre-requisites early. Your advisor will assist you.
  • Know published deadlines; i.e. registrationpaymentswithdrawal, etc.
  • Understand which courses qualify as college transfer – talk to your advisor!
  • REGISTER EARLY!
  • HAVE FUN!
