Yectli and Tonalmitzin Guzman-Perez moved to Greensboro from Mexico in 2021 because of their dad's job. They were excited to begin their studies at GTCC, but they were also nervous. They faced a language barrier, cultural differences, and changes in everyday life, such as finding a grocery store, choosing a pharmacy, and other things. Now, they're helping others in the same situation.

Once destined for the scrap pile, a former business jet cockpit mock-up has been transformed into a valuable avionics training aid. The auto giant has invested more than $1 billion about 20 miles south of Greensboro. GTCC student Muhammud Abu-Kass is part of the first class of the FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) Program. During the two-year program, students are sponsored by Toyota and paid to complete long hours in the classroom and hands-on work with Toyota employees at the plant.

The N.C. State Board of Community Colleges approved several new programs and certifications at the April 19 board meeting, demonstrating the importance of preparing students for emerging industries, including the GTCC Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing program. As electric cars grow in popularity, the need for their batteries increases. GTCC's battery manufacturing program is teaching students how to meet that need.

Daniela Campbell was home-schooled, first through a co-op and then solely by her mom. It was from her home-schooling peers that she heard of GTCC and was intrigued by the college’s offerings and advantages. Not only did she quickly become a proponent of community colleges in general and GTCC in particular, she began taking advantage of programs as soon as possible. Perhaps the biggest advantage she embraced was the Longleaf Grant, which she says has been “a blessing, a giant gift.”

“If you’re going to talk about aviation training in North Carolina, you are at ground zero,” stated Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) President Randy Parker. “We have the largest aviation program in the state, probably the biggest in several states, and one of the three largest programs on the east coast. In our labs, you will find equipment you won’t see at the universities or most community colleges in North Carolina or the states around us.”

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing — GTCC leaders call it CAM for short — is the college’s newest and most modern building. The $35.5 million facility that opened last year covers nearly 6 acres and gives significantly more space — and more state-of-the-art equipment — to five college programs.
“Vocational careers are absolutely essential to our economy,” Randy Gunter, the dean of the college’s industrial, construction and transportation technologies division, said during a tour of the building last month. “Bottom line, (CAM is) helping to drive economic development for the county.”
